My little boy clearly takes after me; I am an incredibly fussy eater and above all, I can’t cook. Benjamin knows what he likes and sure as anything knows what he doesn’t. Concerned at the lack of healthy protein he was getting (obviously my husband’s diet was rubbing off on me) I decided we needed to try and get some Omega 3’s down him. Dutifully I searched for a fish pie recipe in the mass of Baby cookbooks gathering dust on my bookcase and presented the chosen one to my husband. After some badgering he spent hours lovingly preparing a Salmon and cod fish pie, topped with mashed potato and finished off with a handmade ‘fish’ made of potato.
We sat Benjamin down at the table and got excited at presenting him with this new concoction. He was very underwhelmed. He took a bite and promptly spat it out. Wonderful. Cue Lucy the Labrador to come and clean it up. After some more failed attempts I remembered a friend telling me about the wonders of ketchup. I promptly grabbed some out of the fridge and proceeded to squirt it on the fish pie watching Benjamin laugh as the bottle made bottom noises. He was intrigued by the red colour and happily stuck his spoon in the pie swirling the ketchup round and round. BINGO! The spoon moved upwards and Benjamins mouth opened up like a bird, making ‘mmmm’ noise as he ate it. Ten spoonful’s down and we had success. Fish pie- 1 , Benjamin -0. Thank you Heinz, you did it again. Next time I’m going to try Ketchup on green beans- for me.
